Out For A Stroll

I haven’t been out hiking (or updating this site) for quite a while. It is tennis season and I’ve been running on the treadmill in the basement quite a bit, but I haven’t taken any time to get out and hit the trail. Well, enough of that! Today I went out to Rabbit Mountain and got some dirt under my feet, clean air in my lungs, and some sun on my skin (if it was able to penetrate the SPF 50 sunblock I was wearing).

I recently got a Suunto Quest GPS Pack for tracking heart rate information, speed, distance, and all kinds of other stuff while I’m exercising and it has been a fun addition to my workouts. If you’re interested you can view the information collected for this hike here (including the route map). This was a pretty easy hike and I think I’ll try running it the next time I am out, not sure I’ve got 4 miles of running in me, but I won’t know unless I try. ;-)

There were tons of grasshoppers, butterflies, and one giant caterpillar out with me today as well. I did a little investigating, and I think the caterpillar I saw was for either a Columbia silkmoth or a Cecropia silkmoth. Maybe there’s an expert out there who can tell for sure. Either way it was cool to see and it was a nice morning on the trail. I hope it won’t be as long until my next outdoor adventure!

Beautiful photos! The caterpillar is amazing. What a cool color! Kinda neat that you noticed both a caterpillar and a butterfly—“before” and “after” states, on the same hike. Neat synchronicity around transitions. :)
