My Personal Combine

After doing a bit of traveling and recovering from a bit of a cold I picked up, I figure it is time to get back on the fitness wagon. Also, the holidays are coming up, so it’s always a good idea to try to lose a few extra pounds before the mashed potatoes, cookies, and pies start making their appearances.

Given that it is football season around these here parts, I thought it would be fun to track my progress by measuring myself in some of the NFL Combine drills. Now don’t get your hopes up, you won’t be seeing me on the field, well, ever, but I thought it would be fun to see the comparisons as well as give me some targets moving forward.

I’m currently 6’3” and 225 Lbs., which puts me right around the average size of an NFL Quarterback (source), so I’ll use those numbers in my comparisons. Interestingly enough, that also makes me overweight according to my BMI. I’m know most QBs have more muscle mass than me and wouldn’t be considered overweight, but since I have more “beer” mass that categorization is probably correct.

All right, all right, enough talk. Let’s see how I did…

40 Yard Dash
    My Result: 6.2 seconds
    QB Average: 4.87 seconds
Vertical Jump
    My Result: 18”
    QB Average: 31”
Broad Jump
    My Result: 75”
    QB Average: 110”
20 Yard Shuttle
    My Result: 5.9 seconds
    QB Average: 4.34 seconds
3 Cone Drill
    My Result: 10.1 seconds
    QB Average: 7.09 seconds

OK, well, I’ve got some work to do. Honestly, some of those weren’t as bad as I thought they’d be, but others were a little embarrassing. Time to start training! I plan on posting updates every month or so, so stay tuned and we’ll see how close I can get to those averages!
